Togo

Togo is the "unsung hero" of the Alaskan Iditarod sled dog race, having led his team some 300 miles for musher Leonhard Seppala in the famoust quest to deliver vaccine serum to Nome in 1925.  This life-size bronze was commissioned by the New York City Department of  Parks and Recreation in 2001 for Seward Park named after William Seward of "Seward's Folly", who signed the agreement under Lincoln and Johnson for the purchase of Alaska for $7.2 million.   The children's playground in Seward Park was the first municipal playground in the United States.  An article about the production of this sculpture, "Togo in Seward Park", was published in Mushing, the magazine of dog-powered sports, January/February 2003.
