RE: Shelley S. Curtiss

To Whom It May Concern:

I have known Shelley as a professional artist for over a decade. She served as Artist in Residence at EOU from September 1997 through March 1998. She is a productive and disciplined artist with personal style and vision. Her art is deeply rooted in her research of the mythological and she has developed her visual vocabulary to express that aspect of the human condition. Her use of artistic symbolism and concern for content and meaning is exemplary.

Shelley sees the artist's roll in relationship to her community. Her visionary talents transcend the image and engage her audience.

RE: Shelley S. Curtiss

To Whom It May Concern:

I have had the pleasure of co-teaching with Ms. Curtiss on two occasions in the recent past. The first occasion was on the Alaskan Pribilof islands of St. Paul and St. George, in the Bering Sea, where we were employed as artists-in-residence by the Alaska State Council on the Arts. The second occasion was in Joseph, Oregon where we were employed as drawing and 3-D design instructors by Blue Mountain Community College.

In my observation of her classroom activities, I was particularly impressed with Shelley's abilities to communicate at all student levels, and her commitment to bringing contemporary ideas and approaches to her classroom. The students really respect her as an instructor and like her as a person.

RE: Shelley S. Curtiss

To Whom It May Concern:

When, two years ago, I signed up for a Drawing and Composition class taught by Shelley Curtiss, I was half-convinced that it would prove to be too simple, dull, or not useful. I was 100% wrong. Shelley taught not "how to draw" but rather "how to imagine, how to re-imagine, how to think like an artist". Using her deep store of experience, intelligence, passion, and humor, she taught to the heart of the matter. She believes in what she does, is organized about it and, hence, conveys it well. I recommend her classes to anyone interested in the visual arts.
